Christmas officially kicks off once the Rockefeller Christmas tree is up in lights. The 2018 Rockefeller Christmas tree is a 72-foot-tall Norway spruce and weighs roughly 12 tons. The tree is about 75 years old and has a 45-foot diameter. The tree is from Walkill, New York and was placed in front of Rockefeller Plaza on Saturday, November 10 by crane.
Since being placed in front of Rockefeller Center, the tree has been covered in 50,000 lights and will be topped with a Swarovski star topper.
The tree lighting ceremony is free and open to the public. Even though the festivities will start at 8 P.M. people start lining up for the tree lighting at 3 P.M. The tree will be officially lit at roughly 9 P.M.
The tree will be lit from 5:30 A.M. until 11:30 P.M. daily and will be on display until January 7, 2019.
