Alright ladies, let’s get in formation. According to a new study, movies that are led by women made more money than men.
According to the Creative Arts Agency and Shift7’s latest study, the top movies from 2014 to 2017 starring women earned way more money than movies led by men. Women beat out men in blockbuster movies and indie movies.
The study analyses the box office revenue and budget of the 350 top grossing films between 2014 and 2017.
The study says that 105 out of the 350 films were female-led and the other 245 films were led by men. The study broke down each film by budget and how much each film grossed. The budget categories were less than $10 million, between $10 million and $30 million, between $30 million and $50 million, between $50 million and $100 million and then over $100 million.
In every single one of the categories, female-led films grossed more than male-led films.
Then the study broke down (by the same financial categories) which films passed the Bechdel Test. The Bechdel Test is when two female characters have a conversation that is not about a man. The chart shows that films that past the Bechdel test grossed more money than those that didn’t.
The study also shows that, “since 2012, all films that have made more than $1B in box office revenue have passed the Bechdel Test.”
According to the New York Times, “Women accounted for about a quarter of sole protagonists in the top films of 2017.”
Basically, this just means people will pay to see women on the big screen, so keep casting them.
