The Benefits & Drawbacks Of Marrying Young

People in the United States are getting married later than ever. According to 2017 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the average age to get married for the first time is 27.4 years old for women and 29.5 years old for men. If you compare this to the statistics from 1990, it’s obvious that a large jump has been made over the course of the last few decades; back then, the average age to get married for the first time as a woman was 24. In the 1950’s, it was only 20 years old. That’s absolutely wild to me. I’m 20 years old, and the only long-term, planning-out-forever-together relationship I’ve had is my relationship with pizza.

Even though the average first-time marriage age is rising, there are still people who decide to get married young for one reason or another. Though nobody in my immediate circle has talked about a wedding in a serious way, I do know that friends of my friends in their very early twenties–think still in college–are engaged. Whenever I hear that someone under 26 is ready to get married, I get slightly ill as I come up with a “congratulations.” The voice inside my head screams, “Don’t do it!” and wonders what the rush is. You’re young adults, you’re still figuring out what you want, and you’re ready to commit to each other for life? Why can’t you just enjoy each others’ company and get married when you hit 30?

It’s time to put the judgments aside, though. Even though getting married super young is not for me, it does work out for some people. Tying the knot early can end in disaster if you aren’t with the right person, but some of us are just lucky enough to find a compatible partner early on and are able to foster a special relationship that lasts for years. If you or someone you know is thinking about getting married at an early age, I encourage you to check out this Reddit thread about women who married young and how life played out for them. Some regret getting married young, some are still happy in their marriages, and all of them seem to have learned something valuable from the experience regardless of the outcome. Here are some of the best responses from women who became wives during early adulthood.

We Heart It

Sometimes attraction fades over time and your partner becomes more of a platonic friend than someone you want to be romantically and sexually involved with.

When you’re really young, your goals and plans may be more malleable than you thought, and you may end up wanting different things in the long run.

You may feel like you are missing out on by being tied down so early.

Younger people tend to be more naïve, which can leave them more susceptible to abuse.

In the end, there is no right or wrong age to get married. There are so many factors that go into whether two people are compatible that age is not necessarily something that makes or breaks a relationship. You’ll just have to trust your gut feeling and hope that you’re part of the 50% that stay together.
