Budgeting is HARD. Working while you’re in school and still feeling broke is even harder. While significant others are undoubtedly some of the best people in our lives, we all know it can get expensive to go out on dates all the time and keep the fun times rollin’. Don’t worry, you’ve got a seasoned broke college student at your service.

1. Cook something neither of you has ever attempted before.

Cooking dinner instead of eating out may seem like a no-brainer, but when you choose to tackle a recipe that neither of you has experience making you’re giving yourselves a bit of a challenge. This will make the task at hand exciting, probably include lots of giggles, and be a great chance to bond with your significant other over the shared success (and/or questionable outcome, lol).

2. Get outside!

If the weather permits, there is something so serene and lovely about being outdoors with your babe. Whether it’s a hike, a picnic, taking your dog to the dog park or just sitting outside at a coffee shop, the change of pace from hiding away in winter weather will give you guys a chance to get out of the Netflix hole you may or may not be in and connect.

3. Check Groupon.

Groupon is a website that offers different deals each day for a local good, service or event in a city. Their deals are always super discounted and can be a great chance to do that one thing you’ve been talking about forever, but never seem to pull off due to funds or even just being busy. If you’ve never used Groupon before you’ll be pleasantly surprised by all the options they have.

4. Game night.

This is one of my favorites. Who doesn’t look back fondly on days filled with Uno, Sorry, Scrabble and everything in between? Local libraries often have tons of board games for check out, or you can ask your parents what they’ve still got at their house in the garage from the good old days. This date idea is especially fun because you can team up with some friends or another couple and pool your game night resources to really go all out.

5. Movie marathon with a twist.

Whatever it may be, Harry Potter, Star Wars or a lineup of classic rom-coms, choose a genre or series and run with it. Here’s the twist: find a recipe online for a snack or treat associated with the films you’ve chosen and make it together! Now you’ve got your favorite movies and yummy munchies to last you guys all night long.

Being on a budget in college doesn’t have to suck the fun out of everything. I hope this helps you out this year with getting in that quality time with your boo!
