One of the best ways to start out the New Year feeling less stressed and at ease is to clean out your closet. If you’re looking at your wardrobe right now wondering how going through and organizing all of those clothes could be in any way relaxing, I promise it will be worth it in the end! If you need a little bit of inspiration to get started, I highly recommend watching the new Netflix show Tidying Up With Marie Condo. After just the first episode you will definitely be ready and motivated to tackle your messy closet.
1. Take It All Out
Turn on some music and get ready to organize. To start you will want to take all of the clothes out of your closet so that you can see everything that you have.
2. Yes or No
Once you have all of your pieces of clothing out in front of you, the best way to figure out what you no longer need is by making piles. There should be a pile of what you know for sure you want to keep, what you definitely want to get rid of, and what you are on the fence about. I always like to follow the rule that if I haven’t worn it in a year, then it’s time to get rid of it.
3. Color Coordinating
When you decide what pieces you really want to hold on to, color coordinating is a great way to keep your closet looking and feeling organized. The easiest way to do this is divide up your tops, t-shirts, sweaters, pants, etc., then hang them up by color from light to dark.
4. Sell or Donate
Selling your clothes on either of the apps Poshmark or Depop are great ways to make a little extra cash. Donating the clothes you no longer want to your local Goodwill is also a fast and easy option to clear out those unwanted clothes. Just make sure you don’t just throw out your perfectly wearable clothes.
