The 2019 Oscars still don’t have a host but they finally have nominees. The 2018 Oscar nominations were announced by Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross on January 22 in Los Angeles.
There are eight films nominated for best picture. The Academy has a limit of 10 films and is close to the maximum this year. The nominations for this category have broken some firsts. Black Panther has become the first superhero movie ever nominated for best picture. While Roma becomes Netflix’s first ever best picture nomination.
Roma is nominated for 10 categories overall and so is The Favourite. These two films have the most nominations.
Unfortunately, diversity is still an issue with the acting nominations. Out of the 20 nominated actors, only four are people of color and two of them are black. Regina King is nominated for best supporting actress for If Beale Street Could Talk; Mahershala Ali is nominated for best supporting actor for Green Book; Rami Malek is nominated for best actor for Bohemian Rhapsody; Yalitza Aparicio is nominated for best actress for Roma.
All of the directing and cinematography nominees are men.
The 91st annual Academy Awards will be presents at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, February 24 at 8 P.M. EST on ABC.
