Katlyn Alix, a 24-year-old St. Louis police officer, has been identified as the victim that was shot and killed by a fellow police officer on Thursday, January 24. According to reports, the officer who shot Alix allegedly “mishandled” a firearm.


What Happened?

According to reports, Alix — was who off-duty at the time of the shooting — was shot in the chest around 1:00 a.m. while in the company of two other officers at a home in the 700 block of Dover Place in St. Louis.

In a statement, Police Chief John Hayden said that another on-duty officer who was sitting in the living room mishandled a gun, which resulted in Alix being shot in the chest. After the shooting, Alix was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Additionally, police clarified that Alix was killed with a revolver, not a department weapon.

It is unclear which of the two male officers in the home with Alix fired the shot. Both of the on-duty officers are 29-years-old have been with the department for nearly two years, Hayden said.

“Officer Alix was an enthusiastic and energetic young woman with a bright future ahead of her. On behalf of the Metropolitan Police Department, I extend my deepest sympathies to the Alix family during this extremely difficult time. I ask the St. Louis community to keep the Alix family and the entire Metropolitan Police Department in your thoughts and prayers as we mourn this tragic loss,” Police Commissioner John Hayden said in a statement.

At this time, the investigation is being led by the St. Louis Police Department’s Force Investigation Unit.

A spokeswoman for the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office told KMOV 4 that “it is too early in the investigation to determine whether charges will be filed.”

Alix is survived by her mother, father, husband, and sister.
