Andrew Harris has been identified as the college football player at the University of Montana, died in an apparent suicide on Tuesday, January 22.
Harris, a 22-year-old defensive end who was majoring in business management at the University of Montana, had just completed his redshirt junior season at the university, in which he appeared in 11 games for the UM Grizzlies. His redshirt junior saw Harris make the switch to the defensive line, where he registered one tackle and half-a-sack in eight games.
While no further information about Harris’ death was released, Missoula Police Sgt. Travis Welsh said that authorities are currently investigating the death as a suicide.
University of Montana athletic director Kent Haslam released the following statement about Harris’ tragic and untimely passing:
“All of us in Grizzly Athletics were saddened to hear of Andrew’s passing. On behalf of our department and the more than 300 student-athletes here at UM, we send our deepest condolences and heartfelt thoughts to the Harris family, and all those who knew and loved Andrew.”
Harris, a graduate of Kalispell Glacier High School, was a first-team all-state football while in high school.
The University of Montana said that they will be offering counselors to any member of the community who needs the support.
The hearts of everyone in Grizzly Athletics are heavy today with the loss of one of our own.
