According to Variety, Grande and the producers of the show had different visions for her performance. Basically, Grande felt “insulted” that the producers didn’t want her to perform her latest number one single “7 Rings.”
A compromise was reached between Grande and the producers for her to do a medley that included “7 Rings.” But Grande pulled out once the producers said that the second song in the medley would be picked by them.
Her frustrations are justified because supposedly the producers are not being this controlling over the other performers’ song choices.
Grande is nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance for “God Is A Woman” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Sweetener. Grande’s next album, Thank U, Next, is slated to drop two days before The Grammys. Two of her singles from Thank U, Next have gone number one and have shattered music video and streaming records. Not having her perform during the award show is a big deal.
This situation is similar to last year when the Grammy’s didn’t offer Lorde a slot to perform. Lorde was one of the Album of the Year nominees, so it was a big deal. The show eventually offered a spot to perform during the Tom Petty tribute but she declined.
Grande pulling out of the show and not attending is huge considering the Grammys has been using her to promote the award show.
