Amy Hamilton, a 40-year-old teacher from Corydon, Indiana, has been arrested and charged after she allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship with an underage student in her Harrison County home.
According to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Hamilton — who was a teacher for the Oldham County School District — allegedly gave an unidentified teenager alcohol before having sex with him in her home back in March 2018.
Court records indicate that the teen, who was a former student of Hamilton’s, told investigators that he spent the night at Hamilton’s house and she “gave him several beers while she drank multiple bottles of wine.”
Additionally, the teenager claimed that while he tried to initiate physical contact earlier in the day, Hamilton had resisted before initiating the sexual contact herself after drinking alcohol.
Furthermore, the court affidavit states that a search of Hamilton’s phone found messages alluding to an intimate relationship between the two.
For her alleged crimes, Hamilton has been charged with felony sexual misconduct with a minor and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Hamilton is just one of many teachers to be arrested for sex-related crimes in recent years, as dozens upon dozens of school officials and teachers have been charged with similar crimes recently.
As for why there has been such a significant increase in instances of teachers having inappropriate relationships with students, researchers believe that technology is to blame.
According to a report from the Texas Education Association, research indicates that smartphones make it easy for teachers to privately text and talk with students and also make it increasingly possible for teachers and students to share explicit images.
