Mandy Moore Claims Ex-Husband Ryan Adams Was Psychologically Abusive

Mandy Moore opened up to the New York Times about the abuse she endured during her first marriage to Ryan Adams.

Moore alongside six other women accused the musician of harassment, obsessive behavior and emotional abuse.

Moore and Adams began dating in 2006 when she was 23 and he was 33. They were married three years later in 2009.

The singer/actress told the NYT that during their relationship Adams was “psychologically abusive.”

“Music was a point of control for him,” Moore told the publication. During their relationship, Moore didn’t release any new music.

She said that in 2010 Adams offered to work with her on her next project. When she left her music manager, he was the one who encouraged her to not seek out a new one or other producers effectively making him the gatekeeper to her career.

Adams would promise to record songs with her, book her studio time and then give it away to another female artist. Moore said he would lash out at her.

“He would always tell me, ‘You’re not a real musician, because you don’t play an instrument,'” Moore revealed.

“His controlling behavior essentially did bock my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid-to-late 20s,” she continued.

Their divorce was finalized in 2016.

Adams lawyers told the NYT that Moore’s description of their relationship is “completely inconsistent with his view of the relationship” and that he was supportive of her “well-deserved professional success.”

Adams took to Twitter to voice his innocence. He apologizes to anyone that he unintentionally hurt but then goes on to say that the NYT article is inaccurate.

“But the picture that this article paints is upsettingly inaccurate. Some of its details are misrepresented; some are exaggerated; some are outright false. I would never have inappropriate interactions with someone I thought was underage. Period,” he tweeted.

“As someone who has always tried to spread joy through my music and my life, hearing that some people believe I caused them pain saddens me greatly,” Adams continued. “I am resolved to work to be the best man I can be. And I wish everyone compassion, understanding and healing.”

Admas most recent fiancĂ©, Megan Butterworth and other female musicians had very similar stories to Moore’s. They all recounted patterned behaviors of emotional abuse. Adams was also accused of having a sexting relationship with a minor. The two exchanged over 3,000 text messages and in one of them, he compares himself to R. Kelly.

Moore is now remarried. She married singer Taylor Goldsmith in 2018 in an intimate wedding.
