Ryan Adams is a musician who gained more fame when he left his band Whiskeytown in 2000. During his solo career, he released 16 albums and became a critical darling. He’s had a long career that has spanned almost two decades. Most people would know him from his cover of Taylor Swift‘s 1989.
Adams has been accused of manipulation and sexual misconduct by his ex-wife Mandy Moore and other female musicians. In a story by the New York Times, they all claim that Adams dangled career opportunities in front of them in exchange for sexual favors. He was also accused of sexting a young musician who was a minor. In one text he even compared himself to R. Kelly, the disgraced R&B artist who has also been accused of manipulation and sex with minors.

Jessica Joffe 2000-2006
In Adams early days he dated writer and former model, Jessica Joffe. The two dated for about six years before calling it quits. After they broke up, Adams uploaded a video to YouTube called “Sad Days” which featured some shots of Joffe. Very subtle. They dated on and off for those six years.
Joffe helped Adams get sober.
Leona Naess 2002-2003
Adams dated musician Leona Naess for about a year. They worked together on music and toured together. At one point the couple was even engaged. The called off their engagement in 2003.
Parker Posey 2003-2004
Adams dated actress Parker Posey from 2003 until 2004. There aren’t many details about their relationship except that Posey has recorded background vocals on some of Adams tracks. Posey mentions her brief relationship with Adams in her memoir, You’re On An Airplane.
They eventually broke up in 2004.
Mandy Moore 2008-2016
Adams dated and married actress/singer Mandy Moore for roughly eight years. They first started dating when she was 23 and he was 10 years older than her.
They eventually married in 2009.
While they were together Moore didn’t release any new music. In the New York Times article, she said, “Music was a point of control for him.”
Moore said Adams psychological abused her and would promise her that he would help her create new music, book a studio then cancel their recording time to let another female artist record. She said that Adams didn’t consider her a real musician because she didn’t play an instrument.
“His controlling behavior essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid-to-late 20s,” Moore said.
They separated in 2015 and their divorce was finalized in 2016.
Phoebe Bridgers 2014
Adams met musician Phoebe Bridgers in 2014 when he invited her to the studio. According to Bridgers, their relationship started off as professional. Adams gave her a pricey vintage guitar and decided he would put out a song of her’s on his label.
Bridgers told the New York Times that soon after Adams began sending her flirty tets and they had a very short and intense relationship. Less than a week into their relationship he was talking marriage and was going to have her open on his European tour.
She said that Adams started to become controlling, obsessive and emotionally abusive. Adams would text bomb her and would want to know where she was at all times. He threatened suicide when she wouldn’t respond immediately.
Bridgers broke things off and he rescinded his offer to have her open on tour for him. The three songs she recorded on his label were eventually released in 2015.
Megan Butterworth 2016-2018
Adams began dating model Megan Butterworth in 2016. They were engaged when Butterworth broke up with him in 2018. She told the New York Times that Adams was emotionally abusive and controlling.
Butterworth said that Adams socially and professionally isolated her and would physically intimidate her. Adams was never physically abusive toward her. After Butterworth broke up with him, she said that he also blew up her phone with text messages, calls and emails. He also threatened suicide in his pleas to get her back.
After breaking up with Megan Butterworth, currently Ryan Adams is single.
