Heaven Vega, 9-years-old, has been identified as the young Bronx girl who hanged herself on Saturday, February 16, after her mother told her it was “too early to be on her cellphone.”
According to the New York Police Department, Vega was found in her Bronx apartment on hanging from her bed with a belt tied around her neck on February 16.
Police later said that the young girl’s mother, Jennifer Vega, said that she told Heaven — who reportedly wanted to go on YouTube — that it was too early to be on her cell phone.
After finding her daughter hanging, Jennifer Vega called 911 as one of her other children performed CPR until emergency responders arrived on the scene.
Heaven, who was the youngest of the four siblings, was transported to nearby St. Barnabas Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
According to a report from the New York Post, Jennifer Vega is “guilt-stricken” over Heaven’s death and reportedly blames herself for her daughter’s death.
“I can’t imagine what the mother is going through right now. A friend of mine spoke to Jennifer, and Jennifer said that she thought that it was her fault,’’ said 59-year-old Zoraida Irizarry, who is a next-door neighbor of the Vega family.
“I don’t get it. She always had a smile on her face. I only ever saw her happy. I would come home and she would be sitting in the hallway doing her homework, I guess because it was quieter out there. I don’t know how her mother can function after this,” Irizarry concluded.
