Iconic fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has passed away at the age of 85-years-old. Lagerfeld was best known for being the creative director of fashion house Chanel.
Lagerfeld’s death comes a few weeks after he missed Chanel’s haute couture show in Paris, which fueled rumors about Lagerfeld’s failing health. At the time of this writing, Lagerfeld’s official cause of death has not been announced.
Lagerfeld, whose career began with Pierre Balmain back in 1955, joined Chanel in 1983.
In his later years, he became known worldwide for his iconic uniform consisting of dark suits, his hair tied in a ponytail, tinted sunglasses, and black gloves. Speaking of his ultra-recognizable appearance, Lagerfeld once said: “I am like a caricature of myself, and I like that.”
Tributes for Lagerfeld — who was born on December 10, 1933, in Hamburg, Germany — have begun to pour out on social media, including from Victoria Beckham, who said that Lagerfeld was “always so kind and generous.”
“So incredibly sad to hear this. Karl was a genius and always so kind and generous to me both personally and professionally,” Beckham wrote on an Instagram caption.
Donatella Versace, another iconic fashion designer, also released a statement on Instagram, calling Lagerfeld a “genius”.
“Karl your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I. We will never forget your incredible talent and endless inspiration. We were always learning from you,” Versace’s Instagram comment read.
At this time, details about Lagerfeld’s funeral services have not been disclosed.
