According to NBC, R&B singer R. Kelly has been charged with multiple criminal accounts of sexual abuse of a teenager.
Kelly, 52, is now facing 10 criminal charges of aggravated sexual abuse, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney Office in Chicago. A judge has issued a no-bail warrant for Kelly’s arrest on Friday.
The amount of victims part of this criminal case is unclear. The prosecutors say the ages range from 13 to 16 years old.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the crimes span from 1998 to 2010. They also report that there are at least four victims part of the case and three of them are minors.
The criminal sexual abuse charge is a class 2 felony in Illinois and each charge carries a maximum sentence of three to seven years in prison.
A week ago, lawyer Michal Avenatti handed over a sex tape to the grand jury to investigate. In the video, Kelly has sex with a woman and keeps calling her vagina “14-year-old p***y.”
These charges come after the documentary Surviving R. Kelly aired on Lifetime. The series explores in detail the sexual abuse, manipulation and pedophilia Kelly has allegedly done. Survivors of the musician, their parents, people from R. Kelly’s circle and even his own brother are all interviewed.
The only major musician in the docuseries is John Legend. Many of his past collaborators were asked to participate, but they all declined.
After the documentary aired, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx made a public plea for new Kelly accusers to come forward so her office could investigate him.
The documentary isn’t the first time Kelly has been accused of sexual misconduct and specifically sex with a minor.
In July 2017, BuzzFeed reported that Kelly captured and imprisoned women at his Chicago and Georgia properties. These women allegedly have to fulfill him sexually and are punished if they break his rules. After this report, many people canceled Kelly amidst the #MeToo era. The hashtag #MuteRKelly became increasingly popular.
Kelly was criminally accused of sexual misconduct before. He was tried on child pornography charges in 2008. The jury found him not guilty and cleared him on all counts.
Foxx is holding a news conference about Kelly’s charges at 2 P.M. Friday.
