Solange Piaget Knowles was born June 24, 1986, in Houston, Texas to Matthew- who is of African American descent- and Tina Knowles (now Lawson)- who is of Louisiana Creole descent. She is the younger sister to Beyonce Knowles-Carter by five years. Growing up in the Knowles household, Solange was introduced to the music and entertainment industry from a young age as she studied theater and dance. From a young age, her talent did not go unrecognized as her father signed young Solange to his label Music World Entertainment.

Solange began to make a name for herself in the music industry as early as 1999 by performing as a backup dancer for Destiny’s Child and later on featuring on the DC 8 Days of Christmas on the song ‘Little Drummer Boy’. Most notably Solange is the main vocalist behind The Proud Family theme song, backed by Destiny’s Child, which aired from 2001 to 2005.

On December 23, 2002, Solange released her debut studio album Solo Star which was released a month later in the United States on January 21, 2003. The album debuted at #49 on the Billboard 200 but received mixed reviews from critics acknowledging the talent of the then year-old but likening her voice and sound to that of her older sister- worrying that she would not stand out on her own.

Shortly after Solo Star, Solange pursued other ventures such as acting. Some of her notable roles include: Nikki in Johnson Family Vacation (2004) and head cheerleader Camille in Bring It On All Or Nothing (2006).

In February of 2004 Knowles married Daniel Smith Jr., Solange would later give birth to the couple’s son Daniel Julez Smith Jr. also known as “Julez”. While residing in Idaho during this time, Solange wrote songs, including co-writing hits such as “Get Me Bodied” and “Upgrade You” from Beyonce’s B’Day album. The couple later divorced in 2007.

Following the divorce, Solange would go on to release her second studio album entitled Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams in 2008. The 60s/70s inspired Sol-Angel and the Hadley St, Dreams which had more commercial success than her debut album. Later she would part with Interscope-Geffen A&M.
