Solange Knowles is no stranger to the entertainment world. Throughout the late 90s and early 2000s we have watched and listened to Solange come into her own. However, it seems that the 2010s has been her true breakthrough era.

Although she is the sister of one of the world’s most successful women, Solange has made a name for herself in the acting and music world. She has been no stranger to the musical world in particular since the early 2000s with her signature soft singing voice. Over the years Solange has racked up an estimated 10 million dollars from music, modeling, acting and especially following the success of her third studio album A Seat At The Table released in 2016.
Childhood & Early Life (1986 – 2000)
Solange Piaget Knowles was born June 24, 1986, in Houston, Texas to Matthew- who is of African American descent- and Tina Knowles (now Lawson)- who is of Louisiana Creole descent. She is the younger sister to Beyonce Knowles-Carter by five years. Growing up in the Knowles household, Solange was introduced to the music and entertainment industry from a young age as she studied theater and dance. From a young age, her talent did not go unrecognized as her father signed young Solange to his label Music World Entertainment.
Early Career (2001 – 2009)
Solange began to make a name for herself in the music industry as early as 1999 by performing as a backup dancer for Destiny’s Child and later on featuring on the DC 8 Days of Christmas on the song ‘Little Drummer Boy’. Most notably Solange is the main vocalist behind The Proud Family theme song, backed by Destiny’s Child, which aired from 2001 to 2005.
On December 23, 2002, Solange released her debut studio album Solo Star which was released a month later in the United States on January 21, 2003. The album debuted at #49 on the Billboard 200 but received mixed reviews from critics acknowledging the talent of the then year-old but likening her voice and sound to that of her older sister- worrying that she would not stand out on her own.
Shortly after Solo Star, Solange pursued other ventures such as acting. Some of her notable roles include: Nikki in Johnson Family Vacation (2004) and head cheerleader Camille in Bring It On All Or Nothing (2006).
In February of 2004 Knowles married Daniel Smith Jr., Solange would later give birth to the couple’s son Daniel Julez Smith Jr. also known as “Julez”. While residing in Idaho during this time, Solange wrote songs, including co-writing hits such as “Get Me Bodied” and “Upgrade You” from Beyonce’s B’Day album. The couple later divorced in 2007.
Following the divorce, Solange would go on to release her second studio album entitled Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams in 2008. The 60s/70s inspired Sol-Angel and the Hadley St, Dreams which had more commercial success than her debut album. Later she would part with Interscope-Geffen A&M.
True EP & Saint Records (2009-2015)
Following the release of Sol-Angel, Solange continued to make on-screen appearances as well as began working on her third album almost immediately. In a 2010 interview with Vibe, Solange candidly talks about the toll the album took on her mentally and emotionally.
In 2012, Solange released her True EP consisting of seven songs as an independent artist. The following year Knowles announced that she would be starting her own record label named Saint Records. Under Saint Records, she would release the compilation album Saint Heron, her single “Rise” and later A Seat At The Table.
A Seat At The Table & When I Get Home (2016- Present)
On September 30, 2016 Solange released her third studio album, under her record label entitled A Seat At The Table. This album would earn Solange a #1 spot on the Billboard charts- making Solange and Beyonce the first sisters to ever hold #1 spots. The album was a huge success, receiving widespread praise and critical acclaim. The album went certified gold and Solange won her first Grammy for the track “Cranes in the Sky” in 2017.
Following the mass success of A Seat At The Table, Solange tried her hand as a video director for SZA’s “The Weekend” alongside her husband Alan Ferguson.
On March 1, 2019 Solange released her fourth studio album named When I Get Home.
