DeGeneres stand up career started in the early 1980s. She began touring nationally and doing comedy. By 1981, she was the emcee at Clyde’s Comedy Club in New Orleans and in 1984 she was titled by the network Showtime as the ‘Funniest Person in America.’ And in 2018, she appeared for Netflix’s new stand up special called Relatable after not performing stand-up comedy for 15 years.

DeGeneres’ work in the film industry first projected in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1986, she made a guest appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and from then on she gained recognition so her career took off. During her career as a film actress, DeGeneres starred in Mr. Wrong (1996), Coneheads (1993), EDtv (1999), The Love Letter (1999) and a series of films from Ellen’s Energy Adventure. She also provided the voice of Dory in the Pixar animated films Finding Nemo (2003) and Finding Dory (2016). Through these films she was awarded the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress; the first time an actress won a Saturn Award for a voice performance.

The first regular TV role DeGeneres featured in was a short-lived Fox sitcom called Open House from 1989 to 1990. From then on she featured on sitcoms consisting of Open House (1989 to 1990) and Laurie Hill (1992). Later on she starred in two television sitcoms, Ellen from 1994 to 1998 and The Ellen Show from 2001 to 2002. It was her sitcom, Ellen, that defined her successful comedy career. The ABC show became an instant hit within the first few seasons of its premiere due to DeGeneres’ style of observational humor that was often referred to as ‘female Seinfeld’. April 1997 marked her highest peak in popularity when she came out as a lesbian on the fourth season of Ellen in an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Through this outbreak, the series went on to explore various LGBT issues relevant on the coming-out process. In September 2003 DeGeneres debut her daytime television talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show which aired about 15 seasons and over 2,000 episodes. Her show continuously rises in the Nielsen rating and has received multiple critical praise and awards. The show was nominated for 11 Daytime Emmy Awards, including Best Talk Show and has won 25 Emmy Awards. By 2009 DeGeneres was a judge on American Idol for its ninth season and from 2017 to 2018 she began hosting the game show, Ellen’s Game of Games on NBC. DeGeneres even hosted a few award events including the Academy Awards, Grammy Awards and the Primetime Emmys.
