Zoe Kravitz Opens Up About Decade-Long Eating Disorder

Being a teenager and trying to discover who you are is hard enough on someone’s self-esteem, but being a teenager in Hollywood with famous parents is sure to do anything but help. Having a drop-dead gorgeous mother who’s also an actress, and a father who’s dated his fair share of supermodels including Adriana Lima is the childhood that Zoe Kravitz lived. Since the age of 13, Kravitz was surrounded by beautiful women, which instead of empowering her, led her down a dark path of insecurity and a 10-year-long battle with eating disorders.

Kravitz, who will be appearing on July’s cover of British Vogue, spoke on the 10-year struggle she faced saying, “My mother was so beautiful and so tiny, I always felt clunky around her, and then my dad was always surrounded by supermodels,” she continued, “I was short, and you feel uncomfortable in your skin anyway at that age.”

Turning to anorexia and bulimia, Kravitz continued to struggle with these illnesses as the years went on. And when she took on the role of Marie, an anorexic woman in the movie The Road Within, her struggles became even worse. She confessed, “It was f***ed up, man. You could see my rib cage. I was just trying to lose more weight for the film but I couldn’t see: ‘You’re there. Stop.’ It was scary.”

Kravitz said that the movie escalated her anorexia by so much that she even stopped getting her period, her immune system shut down, and her thyroid was thrown off.

The movie, which was filmed in 2013, somehow spurred the end of Kravitz’s eating disorders. On New Year’s Eve that year, Kravitz claims, “I just felt it was different. I don’t know if a spirit came over me and said: ‘You have to stop.’ I feel like something has left my body, like some part of me is gone now, something that was making me so insecure.”

Kravitz is not the only star who has recently opened up about their battle with eating disorders that potentially stemmed from their famous parental upbringing. Model Amelia Gray spoke very openly about her struggle with anorexia after an episode of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills aired this past Tuesday, in which her famous mother, Lisa Rinna, is a housewife on.

The episode features a scene where the family is having dinner together, and Amelia is refusing to eat. When she is questioned by her father, Harry Hamlin, why she isn’t eating, she becomes aggressive, yelling at him and even giving him the middle finger. She even goes as far as saying she won’t eat because she’s “allergic to everything”.

Amelia Gray shared these thoughts on her Instagram before the episode aired: “PSA!!!! Lollll tonight on the housewives you will see how my eating disorder affected myself and my family. There is a scene where I am EXTREMELY rude to my dad and the food that he wants me to eat. During that time, one year ago — I was not in a good place at all. I may have looked like I was recovered but I most definitely was not. Within the scene you will see me lashing out due to my fear of food. The person displayed in tonight’s episode is not the person I am. It was the person anorexia made me.”

Also included in the episode was Rinna’s feelings on her daughter’s struggle, as she stated in her confessional, “You can’t help but blame yourself. You know, it’s like, ‘What did we do to f*** her up?’ Maybe we did something. I don’t know. I just know that it’s really, really hard to watch Amelia be in pain.”

Both Zoe Kravitz and Amelia Gray are thankfully recovered from their eating disorders, and their strength and bravery to speak openly about them will hopefully aid others in their battle to overcome these horrible illnesses.
