There is no question that puppies are pretty irresistible when they throw out their cutest face or what us humans call “puppy eyes.” Even adopting the term ourselves in piracy when we have the desire for empathy or are asking for something. The typical assumption being that dogs make the face when they know they have done something wrong or are just trying to be outright adorable. However, according to a study published by science journal PNAS News, the face isn’t just a coincidence, but rather the development of facial muscles amongst the cute creatures to better communicate with humans.
It is a rarity to meet someone who isn’t a dog person, in fact, our society frowns upon those who aren’t. With their irresistible energy and cuteness, their ‘puppy eyes’ are just the cherry on top. The study conducted by researchers found that domesticated dogs have more control over the muscles that fall under the eyebrow, as opposed to other animals. This allows for the appearance of their eyes to be wider, which closely mimics that of human infants, resulting in the immediate “awwww” reaction amongst individuals.

Next to cats, dogs have become one of the most domesticated pets amongst humans. This being stated, it is understandable how this evolution would have occurred when looking at the development of the relationship with these friendly pets and people. When conducting research, scientists also looked at the same traits in dogs relatives, wolves, and found the results to be strikingly different. In fact, wolves can barely move the same feasible eyebrow muscle that domestic dogs can.
Other than proving that dogs really are man’s best friend, the study exemplifies that the companionship has led to the development and adaptation of more human-like characteristics to further the clarity of common ground between pet and caretaker. While there are multiple hypotheses of the exact reason behind why this has developed, it is undeniable that it almost entirely has to do with the creatures inherent desire to be closer to humans.
So cuddle up with your pet! And the next time they give you ‘puppy eyes’ remember that it is just your dog trying to be more like you.
