Disney Debuts First Mulan Live-Action Movie Trailer

As The Lion King’s release date quickly approaches and with the recent remake of Aladdin ending its run in theaters, Disney has debuted a teaser of their next project, Mulan. On Sunday, July 7, the first trailer of Disney’s live-action remake of the 1998 film, Mulan, was released during the FIFA Women’s World Cup final between the United States and the Netherlands.

The movie is directed by Niki Caro with Liu Yifei portraying the lead role of the Chinese legend, Hua Mulan.

In November 2018, Yifei was announced for the lead role, after a year-long search casting call that looked at about 1,000 candidates.

In the 1998 animated film, it follows Mulan as a disguised man who takes the place of her father in an effort to defeat the Huns. The remake will follow the same plotline featuring similar aspects, but fans noticed some notable facets that were missing upon the trailer’s release.

There were no signs that the new movie will be a musical, like the 1998 classic, or the fact that the fan-favorite animated dragon, Mushu would star in the film.

Despite the pronounced differences in the new version, Mulan’s character and strong martial arts skills are still portrayed the same as the original animated movie.

The trailer displays various battles and action sequences throughout the teaser.

“It is my duty to fight,” says Mulan in the trailer.

The film also stars Donnie Yen as Mulan’s mentor, Commander Tung, as well as Jason Scott Lee as Hun leader Böri Khan, Yoson An as an ally/potential love interest Cheng Honghui, along with Gong Li as the witch Xianniang and Jet Li as the emperor.

Watch the trailer for the new live-action reboot of Mulan below.

Disney also featured the first poster for the film on its Twitter account.

The film is set for release on March 27, 2020.
