Disney is continuing to remake live-action films of their classic hits. Their next project, The Little Mermaid, is set to begin filming in early 2020.
The feature will have all the original songs as well as new music. Original composer, Alan Menken is collaborating with Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, to co-write new lyrics for the upcoming film.
Recently, Disney has released more details pertaining to the casting of the fan-favorite movie.
Halle Bailey: Ariel
R&B singer, Halle Bailey, has been cast to play the beloved role of Ariel in Disney’s upcoming live-action film.
Bailey,19, is apart of the duo group, Chloe X Halle, alongside her sister Chloe Bailey, 21. They launched their YouTube channel in 2011 with a cover of Beyoncé’s, “Best Thing I Never Had”. The two sisters caught the attention of the singer herself in 2015 when Beyoncé signed them to Parkwood Entertainment, her management company.
In regards to the news of Halle Bailey’s casting, the singer tweeted, “Dream come true…”

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance – plus a glorious singing voice – all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” film director, Rob Marshall said in a statement.
The Crazy Rich Asians actress and comedian, Awkwafina, has been cast as the voice of Scuttle, Ariel’s seagull companion. The role has been swapped from a male voice to a female for the remake. The seagull remains to guide Ariel throughout her adventures outside of the sea.
Jacob Tremblay: Flounder
Ariel’s other sidekick, Flounder is set to be voiced by 12-year-old star, Jacob Tremblay. Tremblay is known for his roles in Room for which he won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer and was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. In 2017, he also starred alongside Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts in the film, Wonder.
Melissa McCarthy: Ursula
Melissa McCarthy is rumored to be cast as Ursula for the remake. The Bridesmaids and Oscar nominee would voice the sea witch villain.
There is no news yet on who will play Prince Eric, King Triton, Ariel’s sisters or the iconic lobster, Sebastian. According to the studio’s press release, “additional announcements regarding The Little Mermaid are expected in the coming weeks.”
