An American man died after he dove underwater to propose to his girlfriend in a resort located off the coast of Tanzania. The couple traveled from Louisiana, US to Tanzania as part of a to-do list. They were staying on Thursday at Manta Resort, a luxury vacation spot known for its floating and underwater rooms.
The man’s girlfriend, Kenesha Antoine, was in their underwater room when Steven Weber tapped into the glass with a handwritten note inside a ziploc bag and a ring on the other hand, BuzzFeed reports.
“I can’t hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. But… Everything I love about you I love more every day. Will you please be my wife. Marry me???” Weber’s handwritten note read.
According to BuzzFeed, Weber didn’t make it out of the water on time and didn’t hear Antoine’s yes.
Antoine then took to Facebook and wrote a lengthy status with the video of Weber’s underwater proposal and several pictures of their recent Tanzania trip lamenting how they will never be able to celebrate their new married life together and how the day that was supposed to be the best day of their lives became the worst day.
“I will try to take solace in the fact that we enjoyed the most amazing bucket list experiences these past few days, and that we both were so happy and absolutely giddy with excitement in our final moments together,” wrote Antoine in her Facebook status.
A spokesperson for the State Department told BuzzFeed that they were aware an American man died in Tanzania and they are ready to assist when necessary.
Matthew Saus, the CEO of Manta Resorts, told the BBC how everyone is “shaken” by what happened to Weber at the resort.
Towards the end of her Facebook status, Antoine just asked for prayers and to send love. She then went on to describe Weber as someone ready to give love and spread joy and laughter.
She even jokingly added, “and knowing him, always quick with an off-color joke, he’s probably entertaining someone with a story about how he royally screwed up that proposal and died while being extra. Rest well, my sweet baby! Always know that you are forever loved! ❤️😢🙏🏽”
