Miley Cyrus has always been open about her sexuality and about being queer, even when the star was involved in a heterosexual relationship with her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. In multiple interviews, she preached about the importance of not putting labels on people’s sexuality and the ability to freely be who she wants to be.
In February, she told Vanity Fair that, “We’re redefining, to be fucking frank, what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship. A big part of my pride and my identity is being a queer person. What I preach is: People fall in love with people, not gender, not looks, not whatever. What I’m in love with exists on almost a spiritual level. It has nothing to do with sexuality. Relationships and partnerships in a new generation—I don’t think they have so much to do with sexuality or gender.”
Again, in July, Cyrus told Elle, “I’m in a hetero relationship, but I still am very sexually attracted to women. People become vegetarian for health reasons, but bacon is still fucking good, and I know that.”
However, recently Hemsworth and Cyrus have separated and Cyrus has moved on with singer, Cody Simpson. The couple has not been shy about sharing their newfound love on social media platforms, like Instagram.

Last night, the couple simultaneously went live on Instagram together and have received a ton of backlash for saying the following:

Cyrus says, “Don’t give up,” she said. “You don’t have to be gay, there are good people with dicks out there, you just gotta find them. You just gotta find a dick that’s not a dick, you know what I mean?”
Simpson laughed in response and repeated her “don’t have to be gay” comment. Cyrus replied, “I always thought I had to be gay because I just thought all guys are evil, but that’s not true. There are good people out there that just happen to have dicks. I’ve only ever met one, and he’s on this live.”
It sounds like she was throwing shade at Hemsworth as well as invalidating the LGBTQ community, making it seem as if being gay was a choice, not a lifestyle.
Many users on Twitter have responded to Cyrus’ poor choice of words:

1st part was stupid. If someone is straight they just wait for the right person or stay single. Are you trying to "justify" that u were with a woman before him. 2nd part yes there are good guys but you've only been with this boy like 1 month. Wait before you make big statements.

Miley it's tripping, being gay/les(LGBT) it's not a choice.!We can't change our sexual orientation just cause we want to,and this is not even funny. she should stop speaking if she don't know what she is taking about.

However, there are some fans that have also jumped to defend Cyrus saying that the singer was “only joking:”
It’s a joke! If people can’t understand that those are the stupid ones! She’s openly pansexual…the point of this was that she thought she would only find a good couple if it was a woman cause all men in her live where dicks…if you get it in another way check up your brain

Regardless if Cyrus was joking or not, this isn’t the kind of joke she should have been making, especially considering the number of users she reaches on a daily basis.
