Thanks to Silicon Valley, the capital to the tech world and innovation, technology has become a part of our lives. And as of recent research, this includes our love lives. Consultant, Gal Szekely, shares with Business Insider the most common relationship problems that are influenced by the technology industry that he often comes across.
One Provider
Szekely explains, “The person working in tech is usually the main provider, especially if the couple has children. Because of the work culture in the tech world, that person likely has to work long hours and bring their work home with them, while care work falls to the other person, usually a woman.”
Lack In Language
People who work in tech think a little differently than those who don’t. They use logic, and are in constant work mode. It’s hard to express what they want or need creating unhealthy communication skills. “Many people who work in the tech world tend to be very logical, so when it comes to personal relationships, they don’t have language skills,” says the Silicon Valley consultant.
Cultural Differences
Most people in the industry are immigrants. This creates misunderstandings between people who were raised in different cultures because they hold different expectations. Szekely says, “If couples are from different cultures, there are ways that they can miss each other based on assumptions from how they were raised…if one person is more “Americanized” than the other.”
Children
The tech industry isn’t that traditional, so the decision of having kids isn’t always a given option. It’s important that the couple is vocal and clearly communicates their views on starting a family, or they might start to see problems from not giving each other what they want.
Affairs
Tech provides an increasing opportunity for affairs more than any other industry. “Long hours and constant communication can foster closeness with coworkers, and work trips offer opportunism,” said Szekely. It goes without saying that this creates a major conflict in any relationship.
