Lizzo Named TIME Entertainer of the Year

Lizzo’s big year continues. On Wednesday, December 11, the music star was named Entertainer of the Year by TIME Magazine. The honor comes shortly after it was announced that Lizzo leads the 2020 Grammy Awards with the most nominations.

She also recently went viral for her outfit at a Los Angeles Lakers game.

“I’ve been doing positive music for a long-ass time. Then the culture changed,” Lizzo said in her interview with TIME.

“There were a lot of things that weren’t popular but existed, like body positivity, which at first was a form of protest for fat bodies and black women and has now become a trendy, commercialized thing. Now I’ve seen it reach the mainstream. Suddenly I’m mainstream! How could we have guessed something like this would happen when we’ve never seen anything like this before?”

Lizzo became a sensation this spring after her hit song “Truth Hurts” — which initially released in 2017 — was featured in the Netflix movie Someone Great. From there, it was no looking back for Lizzo as she continued her charge to the top of the Billboard charts.

Other TIME honorees for 2019 were also announced. 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg was named Person of the Year, athlete of the year went to the US women’s soccer team, and business person of the year is Disney CEO Bob Iger.
