You know how the saying goes; behind every great man is a great woman. It’s a tale as old as time itself. But even in more recent times, people have often joked about how Barack Obama was just his wife Michelle’s puppet, and it was her pulling all the strings when he was in office. Whether it’s true or not is a discussion for another day.
But sometimes women get a bad reputation. They’re seen as money grabbers, as someone who is looking for an easy ride to a flashy lifestyle by getting involved with rich and powerful people. But quite often, there is more to some of these characters than meets the eye. Yes, they may well be beautiful, but these Wives and Girlfriends (WAGs) offer so much more than that. Many don’t actually rely on men at all and can certainly support themselves as the strong independent women they are.
For now, we’re here to look at the WAGs of some of the top NBA Players. No match previews here, no discussions about sports betting, no talk being dominated by the male NBA players themselves. This one is all about the women behind these men. And showcasing just how great they really are.
One of the most well-known partners of any NBA star is Gabrielle Union-Wade, wife of Dwyane Wade who most recently played as a point/shooting guard for the Miami Heat. She’s appeared in numerous TV Shows, and even hit movies such as Bad Boys II, being nominated for various awards along the way.
And so before she even got with Dwyane, she already had a successful career of her own, so there was never any chance of her using him for an easy life. As evidenced by the fact she is still working, and has plenty of work in post-production which is soon to be released, such as a role in the new The Proud Family TV series, and remake of the Cheaper by the Dozen film.
It hasn’t been an easy ride for Gabrielle though, as five years into their relationship, she was dealt devastating news. As Wade revealed he had not only cheated on her, but also got another woman pregnant. Somehow though, she forgave him, and they’re still together to this day, showing that maybe love can conquer all.
Ayesha Curry is the wife of lifelong Golden State Warriors player, Stephen Curry, and they’ve been married now for ten whole years. During that time and even starting before then, Ayesha began making a name for herself, and she dabbled in a fair few different activities to boost her fame. She’s been an actress, an entrepreneur, a cookbook author and most recently, the host of her own cooking show, Ayesha’s Homemade (now Ayesha’s Home Kitchen), which airs on Food Network.
It would appear then if the idea behind every great man is a great woman wasn’t true, the saying ‘the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach’ definitely must be. Because if you’ve ever checked out her show or looked at recipes in her cookbook, you know full well that she used those skills to nail Mr Curry down, and who can blame him for falling for her because she’s one hell of a cook.
Arguably one of the most famous of all the WAGs, and she’s done some incredible stuff for herself. But if it wasn’t for her family and their wealth, she probably wouldn’t have come as far as she has, and definitely wouldn’t be here dating an NBA star. Although she has been married to one previously, when she tied the knot with Lamar Odom, who she later split from. It wasn’t the best of relationships between the pair, as can be witnessed on Khloe’s reality show with her family, The Kardashians.
Following that relationship, she got with NBA star Tristan Thompson, who she had a child with. But, before long, like many of her other relationships, the partnership broke down with rumours he had cheated on her multiple times, including one occasion with her half-sister Kylie Jenner. However, during the lockdown they reunited and isolated together. But that may well have been for the sake of their child, because rumours are again in recent weeks they’ve split once more, although no official announcement has been made.
And there you have it, some women who have made it for themselves through their own skill and hard work, not having to rely on their other halves to get there. Although arguably that last inclusion she didn’t really do anything for herself besides being born into the right family at the right time. And she wouldn’t be where she is today without them so, we’ll let you decide on that one.
