Artist, David Cata, With No Pain Threshold Sews Portraits Into His Flesh

David Cata, a 21-year-old artist, has no pain threshold (big whoop!) and is thus able to use his body as a canvas for his project: Overexposed Emotions. In the project Cata sews and stitches portraits of his loved ones into the palm of his hand to exemplify how much they are “woven” into his life. Each palm portrait takes about four hours and without any trouble Cata is able to just rip the portrait out of his hand.
Cata said, “By sewing into the palm of my hand I paint the faces of the people that have left their mark on my life: family, friends, partners, teachers. Their lives have been interwoven with mine to build my history. Pain is no boundary.”
While Cata doesn’t experience pain, the sewing is only done on the first layer of skin so it’s not necessarily harmful to his body. It is however, very gross looking. I still run when the doctor has to draw blood so this is some serious fearlessness in my book. I guess we were wrong about the phrase “no pain, no gain.”
“Every person we meet makes us in some way. Their image projects onto us, reminding us where we come from,” he said.
