Kate Stayman-London, a screenwriter and political consultant, started the Tumblr Ladies Against Humanity as a feminist answer to Cards Against Humanity—you know, “apples to apples on crack.” I never thought the game was un-feminist but I have to say, I am pretty excited about Ladies Against Humanity because it is incredibly well done. It’s not as though the cards about burning bras and abortion rights, they just tend to have more of a ladies lean to them. Instead of completely random references these cards tend to skew towards Mean Girls, Parks and Recreation, wine and lame boyfriends.
Stayman-London, who said she is a big fan of the game, told the magazine, “I was not working on this for a long time. No, seriously, my friend was just saying it just sucks that there aren’t more women, female-centric jokes in the cards.”
The original game, Cards Against Humanity, was created by a group of men and although it is incredibly fun and bonkers, it does “feel bro-ish.” I say we mix the two together! According to New York Magazine, the site was launched just last Wednesday and has had “700,000 viewers and around 1,500 reader submissions.”
Stayman-London said of her job empowering women,”I would say my political work at its best is dismantling systems that disempower people, and I hope that my writing does the same thing. Some of the work I do in the political-consulting world is very serious work. I’ll be on a conference call about how can we help a trans student that’s been arrested in what may have been bullying situation, so I’ll get off that call and write a horrible joke about the Property Brothers.”
This is one smart lady finding a sense of humor in her work and bringing the fun to other ladies.
