Selena Gomez completed a two-week stay in rehab last month. (Which, as Editor-in-Chief Alex wonders, how does a two-week stay actually resolve anything? Are you really cured?) Apparently, Selena went in for issues with alcohol, marijuana and prescription Ambien.
According to TMZ, “Selena blames a lot of her problems on the excesses she was exposed to by being around Bieber and his buddies.” Eeeeh, I am going to stop you there. Addiction is a disease, we’ve learned this all too well given the recent events with Phillip Seymour Hoffman, the source of that disease can’t be blamed on anyone but fate. While I wouldn’t find it hard to believe that hanging out with other drug abusers would exacerbate your own issues, I certainly don’t think the disease of addiction can be inflicted upon you by a person.
However, a major part of living a healthy life with addiction is getting rid of negative influences around you, so that’s probably what she means. I personally get miffed when people don’t believe things like disordered eating (overeating, anorexia, bulimia) or drug addiction are real diseases—yes, like cancer. People often cite the fact that these issues are ones people can “overcome by themselves” but that isn’t true. You need the healthy of medical professionals and the support of family just like any other disease. It’s less likely that people overcome addiction than some forms of cancer. You can have the best resources and never overcome addiction just as you can have the best treatment and doctors and never overcome cancer.
It’s all just randomness and luck when it comes to these things. Drug abuse isn’t the result of having “bad people around you” or “not knowing better” but when you are an addict bad people may find you because all the good ones have fled and negative behavior begets negative behavior. Most people drink alcohol, most do not become alcoholics, most people don’t get cancer either.
Drugs addiction comes down to one thing: chemistry. So, while it’s easy to blame an obnoxious Bieber for being a shit-head I am not going to go there because that completely undermines all of the great people on the planet we have loss to the horrible affliction.
