The Simpsons was initially a satirical cartoon that was scathingly critical of the patriarchy, the church and the state. Rev. Lovejoy would sell his faith for church donations. Mayor Quimby would sell Springfield out for funding. The police force was incompetent, all the male characters on the series just the same, Mr. Burns was a sociopathic one-percenter millionaire who would exploit anyone for another cent, while using his nuclear power plant to pollute the environment. The light at the end of the tunnel was always Lisa, a precocious little nerd who would challenge gender norms and strive for more than what the world would offer her. The show isn’t quite what it used to be today but that doesn’t mean we can’t look back at our favorite episodes and extract some notable observations about life, politics and that damn patriarchy.
