At Grand Valley State University police are investigating a report of racial intimidation after a student drew a hanged man on at least one African American student’s whiteboard and wrote, “Fuck Black History Month.” Racism on college campuses is nothing new, although when I first attended college it did come as a shocker. Universities are supposed to be a place for “cultured”people, right? Not so much. What’s funny is that let’s say, hypothetically, the girl whose dorm this is, is a total ass hat, an insufferable person, why does the person who dislikes her have to make it about race? In this country, if you’re not White, you’re representing your race instead of yourself. I’d like to say that I might be a jerk but that doesn’t make all Black people jerks.
According to the Huffington Post, “Campus police and university housing staff are looking for a perpetrator, GVSU Dean of Students Bart Merkle told MLive. If a student is discovered to be the perpetrator, he or she could face discipline under the university justice system. The case could also be forwarded to the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office, which would decide whether to recommend criminal charges.”
Many students are of course outraged.
