Lena Dunham is not impressed that Jezebel tried to make a scandal out of her untouched Vogue photos. If you remember, the feminist site was outraged when they saw what they thought were heavily Photoshopped photos of Dunham grace the pages of the glossy. So outraged, in fact, that they offered a $10,000 bounty to anyone who could deliver the untouched images. That’s how badly the Jezebel staff needed a body confidence boost a la “Phew, okay, I knew she couldn’t really be that thin/pretty IRL.”
Now, Lena Dunham is publicly addressing the incident. She said to Grantland’s Bill Simmons:
“I felt completely respected by Vogue. I felt like thank you for removing the one line from my face because I’m 27 years old and shouldn’t have that there, I appreciate this and instead of going like, ‘Hey we kind of f**ked up, these pictures aren’t that retouched, Lena, enjoy the Vogue spread that you’ve been excited about since you were 8 years old’.
“They were like, ‘She’s not retouched, but she could’ve been.’ It was this weird almost political maneuvering that I just had a lot of trouble respecting.”
The two sat down for an hour-long interview wherein Lena further discusses the retouching, the backlash from GIRLS and more! Watch the awesome conversation here.
