Our Memorial Day Playlist Will Rock Your Weekend Barbecue

Memorial Day is this weekend and just like every other American holiday, it’s significance has been watered down by retail discounts and the excuse to over indulge food and alcohol. But, if you’re anything like my friends and family, it’s the first of the many long nights you’ll spend together sharing memories and creating new ones over the course of the summer.
If it’s your turn to host the Memorial Day barbecue there are a couple of rules to being the Mick Jagger of Memorial Day cookouts. First, don’t run out of food— its a cookout, not a piss-everyone-off-because-they-were-expecting-to-eat-out. Secondly, don’t run out of drinks (see the previous rule). Lastly, create the perfect atmosphere. You can do that playing great music. Think of the music as the soundtrack to your barbeque. It should fit the scene like “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp” did for Hustle & Flow and “Part of Your World” for The Little Mermaid.
The tunes have to be up tempo enough to keep everyone awake after having a huge plate of food but not too energized that things get rowdy (there should be no twerking next to the potato salad). Pick songs people can sing along and vibe out to, maybe even bust out a little two-step to if they’re feeling a bit Richard Simmons-y towards the end of the night. In short, make sure everyone has a good time and gets lost in the moment.
Creating the perfect playlist for any event is nerve wrecking enough, so CollegeCandy is helping you out with this one. After you’ve paid your respects to our country’s warriors, fire up the grill, get some red Solo cups, grab your speakers and enjoy the long weekend.
