Prepare to jump and down out of pure glee…and then run to your nearest elliptical in a fit of terror. Pool party season is just around the corner.
Because you’ve probably been prepping for this for, like, months now I probably don’t need to give you any pointers on how to choose the right swimsuit. What I can help you out with though? Beauty.
Constructing the perfect pool party look is all about toeing the line between cool-casual-natural and glam-fun-sexy. It’s not hard to do that sartorially – there are tons of bathing suits out there that’ll fit this bill – but figuring the beauty balance can be a little bit of a challenge.
Some girls prefer to go barefaced to the pool; others like to pile on the waterproof products; others still do hair and makeup the way its always done and just never get near the water. Whichever line of thinking you subscribe to, a few tips will help you find your best pool party beauty look for the upcoming season.
The eyes have it: Or not. If there’s one tip I’ll give all women across the board, it’s this: Nix your mascara. You just straight up don’t need it and even if you’re going for the waterproof variety, you run the risk of raccoon eyes if some douchelord decides to submerge you under water or something. You do not need any kind of eye makeup for a pool party for a few reasons. One, because you’re beautiful without out it so give your heart eyes a break. Two, because sunglasses.
Protect and perfect: Your priority when going to one of these fetes is keeping a layer of skin protectant slicked over your skin at all times. A good SPF is necessary; a good base layer (like foundation, powder, whatever) is optional. A great way to get both? With a tinted moisturizer that contains SPF. Just be sure you use a layer of a stronger SPF underneath, then keep the moisturizer on hand so you can replenish both your complexion and your protection as the party goes on.
Hair envy: When it comes to pool parties, hair up is the way to go. For one thing, this allows you to be the cool girl who actually gets into the water without stressing about her hair. For another, this allows you to get a great, even tan on your neck and shoulders. A simple messy bun or ponytail will totally suffice. You may want to avoid a top knot, ballerina bun or anything too polished – it’s a bit stiff for a fun environment.
Do the bold lip: I know that you’re supposed to look extremely natural and product-free when you’re heading to the pool but I’ve to got to say, I do love a good bold lip for a pool party. It’s just a really fun pop of color and it looks so amazing against tan skin. Bold lips also fit the mood of a pool party perfectly and if you’re wearing big sunglasses, this is a great way to keep them for overshadowing your face. Stick to a lip stain instead of a stick or gloss. The finish will be the most natural and it’ll last through all the eating and drinking you’re bound to be doing.
