OKCupid, the online dating site for people who don’t feel like paying for Match.com, collected information based on user behavior and found that no one gives a crap about our awesomely sassy, cutely witty profiles. They just want to look at our pictures.
On an older version of OKC you could rate users by looks and personality but the bigwigs at OKC realized that no one was really using or paying much attention to the personality factor. They changed profile ratings to one overall rating but still felt that people were probably just playing “hot or not” with the pics. They decided to conduct a little experiment to test their theory.
“[OKCupid] manipulated the profiles of about 10,000 users and hid the text on their profiles about half of the time, allowing them to see how much the text influenced the person’s ratings.”
What they found was that the profile, the words you craft like poetry only counts for 10% of what anyone thinks of you. Yes, that means your profile is 90% of how you look and 10% of what you say. Can we not be so shallow, damn.
