I am endlessly fascinated by #basics. If you’re the kind of person who thinks that once something hits the Olds it’s officially over, then look no further because Vogue has officially co-opted the term.
I am obsessed with examining basic bitches because I feel as though I went to college with so many basic people. No, I don’t mean people who drink PSLs and wear Ugg boots but people who, I felt, didn’t really have (or rather didn’t know how to express their) personalities so instead they would rattle off lists of things they liked. The trouble is that when you don’t fully express yourself, it’s harder to foster real connections, therefore it’s harder to have real experiences and so the most exciting thing in your life is going to be a Starbucks drink or Loft sale.
There’s nothing particularly special or individual about those experiences or preferences especially when they’re billion dollar industries. Basic things are things that are universally loved, yet when a #basic can have a three-hour conversation about Mason jars, it’s common to give them side-eye because there isn’t much new one can say about Mason jars. Nevertheless, I believe there is basicness in me and in us all. I can’t help but wonder if we were looking at this all wrong.
Should we be really mocking our friends for getting so much joy out of something so simple? If I could get that much satisfaction and happiness out of everyday, common items, I’d probably feel really good all of the time. Maybe basic people aren’t vapid clichés, maybe they’re people who are comfortable enjoying the little things?
