Between Kanye West declaring his 2020 presidential bid at the VMAs last night and Justin Bieber breaking down into tears after his “What Do You Mean?” performance, it’s safe to say that the VMAs were as wild and untamed as we all predicted they would be. I mean, remember when Miley Cyrus twerked on Robin Thicke and the Internet blew up? Us viewers could only sit and wonder what she would bring to the table last night.
However, unfortunately, we do not have the Twitter audience that Chance The Rapper does—and we likely never will. He took to Twitter last night to criticize not only the controversial host, Miley Cyrus, but also to call out Rebel Wilson for being a racist.
Well, he wasn’t wrong.
Chance The Rapper had criticized her poor comedy skit with Snoop Pigg for being racially insensitive (and let’s face it, it wasn’t even funny). You can read his tweets below.

He took specific issue with Cyrus’ use of the word “mammy,” which, he pointed out, is loaded with exploitative and archetypical racial meaning. His tweet, “The dreads <,” refers to Miley Cyrus’ appropriating black culture once again. Here I thought a year later, Cyrus would have become more worldly and sensitive to cultures and peoples who are not her own. Of course, I’m let down by the pop industry yet another time.
He didn’t tear solely Miley apart, however. Rebel Wilson of Pitch Perfect fame took to the stage in a tank top that read “F*ck tha Stripper Police,” a reference made by a white (read: white) Australian to reap some of the monetary gains of Straight Outta Compton while simultaneously playing down the #BlackLivesMatter movement as well as the rampant police brutality spreading throughout the nation.

I mean, we were probably two years old when we were told that “stealing is bad.” These are not your cultures and they never will be. Embrace your own cultures and heritages. It’s not our fault that your background lacks spice and flavoring—you need not steal from others and call their cultures your own.
It’s some really simple stuff: don’t steal cultures, period.
