I was on the one train the other day with my friend, Leah, and I was talking about how for such a big city, New York City is seriously lacking in music festivals. Sure, we have Governor’s Ball, but it’s not a true festival experience. You don’t need to (or even have the option to) camp out for Governor’s Ball, so what’s the point, really?
However, due to the success of Governor’s Ball in previous years, the city is now becoming more attractive to festival organizers. So much so, the beloved city has caught the eye of Coachella’s organizers, AEG. According to the Daily News, “Coachella could be coming to Queens.”
My, God.
Scratch, it is going to come to Queens—should the deals with the city go through.
The inaugural event, named Panorama, could take place as early as next June, two weeks after Governor’s Ball. Reportedly, Panorama is already booking headliners.
Tom Russell of Governor’s Ball told The Gothamist that “New York City is big enough for two music festivals but the proposed timing of this sets up an unnecessary rivalry. We’re a small, local promoter against a big corporate machine. We know how those fights typically work out.”
AEG’s Panorama music festival could bring attention to the deteriorating Flushing Meadow’s Corona Park. The Park’s last biggest event was the ‘64/’65 World’s Fair.
This isn’t AEG’s first attempt to break into the East Coast’s festival waters. In 2008, they held All Points West in Liberty State Park, New Jersey. The festival lasted for two years.
