Even someone who isn’t a baseball fan knows the Chicago Cubs have had a rough go of things for the past…century. The Cubs have not won the World Series in 106 years, the longest time without a championship title of any team, not just in baseball, but in all North American professional sports.
Maybe that will change this year because for the first time since 2008, the Lovable Losers are making a postseason appearance in a wild card game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night. Winner moves on, loser is done.
One University of Illinois student, Ben Larson, scored tickets to this rare events in a Cubs fan’s life. Just one issue – Larson had a midterm exam scheduled for the following day. Instead of pulling a sick grandma excuse to get out of it, the student took a huge chance by keeping it 100 with his professor.
His brazen email read:
Hi Professor,
I’ll be perfectly blunt with you. My whole life my family and I have been die hard Cubs fans. Wednesday night will be the Cubs wild card game in Pittsburg and we were able to get tickets. We were going to drive there and stay the night. I have been planning on this for awhile and then realized the exam was Thursday the 8 of October, the day after the game. I understand your policy but was possibly hoping you might have a soft spot for the Cubs since, well, it’s the Cubs and they’re in the playoffs.
Best,
Ben Larson
Believe it or not, it WORKED. The prof had some pity and rescheduled the exam.

Honesty is the best policy, people.
