There’s a reason Alex Pettyfer didn’t appear in Magic Mike XXL along with the rest of our favorite male stripper gang. Turns out rumors about him having a falling out with Channing Tatum were very true.
Speaking to Bret Easton Ellis for his podcast B.E.E, Pettyfer explained that a series of incidents led Tatum to not be a fan of his, noting that some reason were “my own fault.”
It seems like Tatum, as a Magic Mike co-producer, wasn’t exactly thrilled with casting Pettyfer in the first place. Alex got the job, but his reps warned him to remain low-key on set.
“I was scared to speak,” Alex revealed. “I actually did my work and I sat in the corner and listened to music because I had been told anything I did was wrong by my reps. I was very insecure as a human being. That also gave me a bad rep because everyone was like, ‘Alex doesn’t speak because he thinks he’s better than everyone else.’ That’s not true. I was just generally nervous and scared to be myself. I was in character.”
Not make matters worse, Alex neglected to pay the rent on a New York apartment he’d rented from one of Channing Tatum’s friends after he had complained about the place giving him an allergy due to mold and dust.
Channing wasn’t going to let that slide and sent a nasty email saying something along the lines of that read something along the lines of, “Don’t f**k my friends. You owe money. Pay the f***ing money. Don’t be a clown.”
Instead of just paying the money, Alex admits that he reacted poorly.
“I really took that the wrong way, which I shouldn’t have, and emailed him back and said, ‘I’m in a real negative head space and can you respect me for a moment and blah, blah, blah,'” he said. “By the end of it, I just said, ‘F**k them, what is money when life is so much more. I’m not paying.’ And I should have just paid. I think he was looking for an excuse to not like me.”
Needless to say, reshoots for Magic Mike were pretty awk.
Ugh. We’re assuming this never fully resolved given Alex’s absence in the film’s sequel, which is really a loss for everyone.
Maybe it’s time to kiss and make up, boys. Magic Mike 3 is waiting…
