Shelley Duvall, one of The Shining‘s lead stars, hasn’t been in the spotlight for years, and Dr. Phil is determined to let the public know why. In the talk show host’s latest show, Duvall remerges looking barely recognizable, claiming that she is “very sick” and needs help from Dr. Phil. Considering he couldn’t help the girl who thought she was pregnant with Jesus, we have little hope that he can do much in this situation. But the man will do pretty much anything for a buck, so why not at least exploit her in front of millions and say he tried, right?
Now 67 years old, it’s clear that Duvall is mentally vulnerable in the short promo from the upcoming show. “I loved Robin Williams, I don’t think he’s dead, “she says, before clarifying that he’s just “shape-shifting” and that she’s seen him since his death in 2014. Later she claims that a man is making threats against her. When Dr. Phil asks who it is, she discloses that it’s actually the Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood.
Twitter has since expressed their disapproval of Dr. Phil’s immoral tactics.
Dr. Phil will not help Shelley Duvall with her mental illness, she needs proper care and not someone who is exploiting her for views 😔

I really hope Shelley Duvall gets the help she needs, privately after Dr. Phil exploits her for the ratings. pic.twitter.com/TMJsDawlRS

Vivian Kubrick, the daughter to The Shining’s director Stanley Kubrick, is calling for a boycott of the show despite accusations that he also abused Duvall while filming the horror classic.
“Dear Dr. Phil. You are putting Shelley Duvall ‘on show’ while she is suffering from a pitiable state of ill health,” she wrote in a Tweet. “Unquestionably, this is purely a form of lurid and exploitative entertainment – it’s appallingly cruel.”
She continued, “Shelley Duvall was a movie star. Whatever dignity a mere unfortunate creature might have in this world, is denied her by your displaying her in this way. I recoil in complete disgust. I hope others will join me in boycotting your utterly heartless form of entertainment, because it has nothing to do with compassionate healing. Sincerely disgusted, Vivian Kubrick.”
According to various reports, Duvall was often isolated during filming and was forced to redo the iconic baseball bat scene 127 times, to the point where her crying and terror weren’t faked. Afterwards, she presented Kubrick with clumps of her own hair to show how stressed she was. He also constantly bullied her, saying that she was wasting everyone’s time on set and telling crew to blatantly ignore her. This obviously isn’t the sole reason for her current mental state, but it certainly didn’t help her overall health.
The full Dr. Phil episode airs tomorrow.
