Today is a day to honor the adorable, sluggish, tree-dwelling sloth!
International Sloth Day was created by the AIUNAU Foundation, a non-profit conservation and wildlife organization based in Columbia.
Basically, sloths spend most of their lives hanging in the trees. People have looked at sloths as slow and lazy, but they always seem to have a smile on their faces. Even though they seem clumsy on land, they are actually really great swimmers and contrary to popular belief, they only sleep approximately 10 hours per day. They also have an extremely slow digestive tract and only excrete once a week.
Unfortunately, so many sloths are captured leading to injuries, getting illegally sold as pets or even being killed by humans. AIUNAU was shocked to discover how many sloths die each year from cars and power lines. The organization recuses the mammals, nurses them back to health and then releases them back into the wild.
How could you not love sloths? We want to keep those sleepy smilies on their faces and make sure they don’t go extinct.
You can donate to the AIUNAU or you can just spread some sloth appreciation today by sharing these adorable photos of these adorable animals.
