It’s amazing that in 2018 there are still so many firsts happening at award shows. This Oscars this year have already had lots of firsts and it hasn’t even aired yet.
Jordan Peele is the first African American to be nominated for three Oscars in one year. He was nominated for Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay for Get Out. Mary J. Blige made history becoming the first person to ever be nominated for an acting category and Best Original Song in the same year. She was nominated for her work in Mudbound. Cinematographer Rachel Morrison has become the first woman ever to be nominated for Best Cinematography for her work in Mudbound. And Yance Ford is the first openly transperson nominated for Best Documentary Feature for his Netflix documentary Strong Island.
There will also be another first at this 90th Academy Awards, Daniela Vega will be the Academy’s first openly transgender person to present during the ceremony.
You’re probably wondering, who is Daniela Vega? She’s a Chilean actress who made her debut in the Oscar-nominated foreign film A Fantastic Woman. Vega, 28, plays Marina Vidal, a trans woman who’s lover Orlando suddenly dies.
She is accused of being part of his death and his family is nothing but cruel to her and shuns her for being trans. The film focuses on Marina overcoming all of this and remaining true to herself.

This is one of the few films that has a trans person playing a trans person on screen. “And had I not been trans, the result would have been different,” Vega told Vanity Fair. “The fact that I am trans provides the script and narrative with a higher level of truth,” Vega says. “But, more importantly, it opens a door into the movie world that had never been explored before, because I am a trans actress playing a trans woman
On top of being a talented actress, Vega is also an opera singer like her character in A Fantastic Woman.
We don’t know which category Vega will be presenting, but we can’t wait to see her on screen.
