32-year-old singer Janelle Monae is making headlines yet again, only this time, the singer is in the spotlight not for her music but for her personal life. For years Monae has chosen to keep intimate details about her sexuality and personal life somewhat private, especially when questioned about it during interviews and while doing press. However, the singer and songwriter recently opened up to Rolling Stone magazine, clearing up any rumors or speculation about her sexuality and addressing it for the first time candidly.

In Monae’s cover story, she told the mag, “Being a queer black woman in America, someone who has been in relationships with both men and women – I consider myself to be a free-a– motherf***er,” she said. According to her interview, she first identified as bisexuality, but after doing some research, she “read about pansexuality and was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.’ I’m open to learning more about who I am.”
Monae’s declaration of being pan-sexual may be the singer’s first public declaration but as it turns out Monae has been dropping hints about her sexuality for years-through her music.
“If you listen to my albums, it’s there,” she said. Songs like “Mushroom and Roses” from The ArchAndroid, where she spoke about a love interest named Mary and the song “Q.U.E.E.N.” from Electric Lady, (which was originally titled “Q.U.E.E.R.”) feature her actually saying “queer” in the song a few times.
Also Monae’s most recent visuals for her singles “Make Me Feel,” and “PYNK,” both featuring rumored love Tessa Thompson.
