The White House Correspondents Dinner is an annual press event that is part meal and part roast. The White House Correspondents Association started the dinner 1921. It celebrates the WHCA journalists who cover the White House. The dinner also shows the symbiotic relationship between the WHCA and the White House, even though the two function independently from each other.
The dinner is typically hosted by a comedian or celebrity and this year is no different. This year’s dinner will be hosted by Michelle Wolf, a comedian who is also a Daily Show alum. She also has an HBO comedy special out, Michelle Wolf: Nice Lady.
The host pokes fun at the president and the past year of politics. Usually, the president attends the dinner, but Trump will not be attending this year’s Correspondents Dinner. He also didn’t attend the previous year’s dinner breaking a decade-long tradition.
