James Clark, 23, probably expected only hearty  congratulations and well-wishes after sharing a video on Twitter of his proposal to his girlfriend of six years, Marquell. Instead, Clark received harsh criticism for popping the question in front of a crowd of onlookers during Marquell’s graduation day in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Clark was accused of being ‘manipulative trash’ and of ruining Marquell’s ‘time to shine’ as his video has racked up a staggering 2.6 million views.

My Baby, who would’ve thought we’d make it this far? I remember waking up an hour early just so I could ride the bus with you to Dutchtown. Or how about after school when we would sit in the parking lot of that church in the back of the neighborhood and just talk for hours. Or do you remember when your curfew was at 9pm and we would convince my parents to cook or something just so you could stay over for an extra 45 minutes lol. Can’t forget about when I first started college at LSU and every weekend I would drive back to Prairieville and stay there for the weekend just so I could be with you. The memories we have together are irreplaceable and I’m so glad God has allowed us to grow together for such a long time. It’s been far from a perfect ride, but through all the ups and downs you’ve always remained solid and for that, I thank you. Congratulations on graduating today, I know how hard you’ve worked for this moment. Now we can really put into motion everything we used to talk about when we were young. I love you baby..Forever and Always♥️💍 👰🏽 #MyFiancé @queenkells__ @queenkells__

Many viewers thought Marquell, wearing her cap and gown, appeared none too pleased as her boyfriend asked the nearby crowd, “Can I just say something real quick?”

“I’m just so proud of my gorgeous, intelligent girlfriend. She put so much work in, long nights of studying, working hard, so it’s so beautiful to see you make it to this moment,” Clark continued before announcing that he had a “special graduation present”‘ for Marquell.

He quickly pulled out a ring and dropped onto one knee before asking, “Will you marry me?” to which Marquell promptly said yes.

One commenter wrote ‘Stop proposing to women during celebrations of their accomplishments and dimming their lights.’

Meanwhile, another user commented ‘I don’t think he took away from her moment. He told her how proud he was of her and her accomplishments.’

Marquell herself weighed in on the debate and stated that she was ‘very happy’ with receiving a degree and getting engaged on the same day. She went on to accuse others of being hateful and jealous.

‘For everyone concerned if I was excited about my proposal! I AM VERY HAPPY!’ she wrote, ‘I’m where y’all want to be… a degree and engagement all in one day… Jealousy is really a disease y’all need to find Jesus! Y’all are so hateful please seek help!’

What do you think, did James Clark step on his girlfriend’s moment?
