Incredibles 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 2004 Pixar animated film The Incredibles, is set to come out on June 15. Incredibles 2 was written and directed by Brad Bird and four out of the five original family members agreed to reprise their voice acting roles from the original film: Craig T. Nelson (as Bob Parr/Mr. Incredible), Holly Hunter (as Helen Parr/Elastigirl), Sarah Vowell (as Violet Parr) and Eli Fucile (as Jack-Jack Parr). Huck Milner will replace Spenser Fox as Dash Parr.

The original movie introduced audiences to a family of superheroes posing as normal humans due to the stigma surrounding superpowers in the society that they live in. Each family member possesses not only a unique power but also a distinct personality. Everyone has his or her own problems, motivations and challenges throughout the film, and the family members ultimately learn how to use their skills–superpower-related and otherwise–to complement each other and work together.

Incredibles 2 picks up three months after Syndrome’s defeat in the first film. Bob agrees to watch over the children as Helen Parr is called to her role as Elastigirl in order to fight crime and help remove the Supers Relocation Program, which makes their superpowers illegal. In addition to the main family members, the sequel features recurring characters from the first movie–including Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) with his cool ice powers and Edna Mode (Brad Bird), the tiny fashion designer with a huge personality–and incorporates new characters played by Catherine Keener and Bob Odenkirk.

Incredibles 2 had a successful world premiere in Los Angeles on June 5 and will be officially released in theaters across the U.S. on June 15. However, if you can’t wait that long, there is a way to see it early; select IMAX theaters are hosting a double feature as early as June 13, showing the original film before the new one. So far, it has been extremely well-received by critics and fans alike, reaching the impressive score of 97% on the popular film rating website Rotten Tomatoes.

The Incredibles isn’t the only movie to get a sequel years after its initial release. From typical TV shows like Full House and Gilmore Girls to animated films like Finding Dory and Despicable Me 3, production companies have been reviving a plethora of shows and movies from the ’90s and earlier 2000s. It is tempting for companies to fall back on pre-existing characters and storylines; since a fan base has already been established, this ensures a certain level of financial security that completely original content does not provide.

Tentpole films–sequels and prequels to existing movies–tend to be lucrative since viewers who enjoyed the first film are inclined to return for a second (or third, or fourth, or fifth…) one. The rapid increase of tentpole films can have negative consequences in relation to creativity because their creation means that many filmmakers are reverting back to old ideas rather than generating new, exciting content. There is a fear amongst professionals in the industry that too many people are consumed by making tentpoles and there aren’t enough unique projects being put into action.

On the other hand, tentpole films can have a positive impact if done well. They are beneficial not only in the financial sense but also because they provide comfort to fans of the franchise. Incredibles 2 is as much for the people who watched the original movie 14 years ago–people who are now in their late teens and early twenties–as it is for today’s children. College-aged students may be more excited for this animated picture than their kindergarten-aged counterparts.
