June 19th is “Juneteenth.” It is also known as Freedom Day. It commemorates June 19, 1865–the day that the abolition of slavery was announced in Texas and the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans throughout the former Confederacy of the southern United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19th.
This day is observed primarily in local celebrations. It is not yet recognized as a national holiday but is recognized as a state holiday in 45 states.
Some traditions at celebrations include public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, singing of traditional songs, and readings of works by African-American writers such as Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and James Baldwin.
Looking for ways to celebrate this important, less known holiday? While many celebrations and parades occurred during the weekend we’ve still got you covered with some notable celebrations.
