Taylor Swift is not one to get political, ever. She notoriously didn’t back a presidential candidate in 2016 and this year she has done some very small things to hint at her political beliefs. But on October 7 Swift voiced many of her political beliefs and endorsed Democratic Tennessee candidates running for office.
In a lengthy Instagram post, Swift starts out saying she registered to vote in Tennessee and acknowledging that she has been quiet about her political beliefs in the past. Swift wrote, “but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now.”
“I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country,” she continued. ” I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent.”
Swift then went on to say that she can not support Marsha Blackburn, who is running for Senate in Tennessee. Swift pointed out all the reasons why she can’t support the Republican candidate. She wrote:
“Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values.”
She went on to say who she will be voting for, which are Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Swift concluded her messaged encouraging her followers to educate themselves on who they’re voting for and to double check on their voter registration status.

This was the first time Swift has every voiced a political opinion at this level. In March 2018 she shared a photo of the March For Our Lives logo and supported gun reform. Her caption was simple but very defiant on where she stood on the issue.
Her fans were shocked that she spoke out so eloquently and poignantly against a political candidate and acknowledged how she was complacent in silence previously.
Gotta admit: this is remarkably thorough. And I appreciate that she admitted she needed to change her habits in this regard after she was silent during 2016. pic.twitter.com/vaLqClItjK

Many of her fans noted that she waited until after the American leg of her Reputation Tour to voice her political opinion.

Taylor waited till her last tour date in America to say goodbye to her MAGA fans once and for all… I don’t know a smarter businesswoman

Her other fans pointed out how Kanye West is now full MAGA, while Swift is now Democratic. Something no one ever saw coming years ago.
Taylor Swift cares more about black people than Kanye West and now I need to lay down because I got a headache just from tweeting that.

Swift finally endorsing a Democrat while Ye goes full tilt Republican. Gotta be a dybbuk loose somewhere.

Bredesen, who is one of the candidates Swift backed, shared her statement on his Twitter and thanks her for her support.
Thank you for the kind words @taylorswift13. I’m honored to have your support and that of so many Tennesseans who are ready to put aside the partisan shouting and get things done. We’re ready for it. Last day to register to vote is October 9. https://t.co/6Xd6YyaJCG pic.twitter.com/CatUBkXPKe

What do you think about Swift’s newfound political voice?
