Hey there Upper East Siders, we have some great news for you. Gossip Girl is officially getting the reboot we have been needing after its final episode aired 8 years ago. The show based on the book series by Cecily von Ziegesar left fans questioning if there would be a return after the series finale aired in December 2012. It has been rumored for months that a spin-off would be in the works and on July 17, a few details were finally revealed about the long-awaited reboot.
The reboot will have Gossip Girl’s creators
It is confirmed that Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the original creators, will serve as executive producers. Writer and producer, Joshua Safran from Gossip Girl, will also be leading the writing of the new series.
It will be aired on HBO Max with 10 episodes
WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service, HBO Max, has ordered 10 episodes, according to Deadline.
It will follow a new group of Manhattan elites
Deadline disclosed a few details about what the new show will entail, “Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media—and the landscape of New York itself—has changed in the intervening years,” the site writes.
There is no news on the cast list
WarnerMedia has remained tight-lipped on who will star in the new show. Fans are sure hoping that the original cast will be in reboot. Since the shows ending, some former Gossip Girl actors have commented whether they would star in it or not.
Blake Lively, who played the iconic Serena Van Der Woodsen explained if she would reprise her role.
“It sort of all depends,” she said in a 2017 interview with Variety. “Would I do seven years of the show? No, because it’s hard work and I’ve got my babies, and I don’t want to be away from them that much. But I’ve just learned in life you never say never. I’m looking to do something that I haven’t done yet, not something that I did. But would I do that? Who knows—if it was good if it made sense. We had so much fun shooting and living and working in New York City.”
Leighton Meester who starred as Serena’s BFF Blair also commented on the possible reboot in an interview with E! News earlier in 2019, “No one’s ever asked me,” she said. “No one’s ever talked to me about it except for in interviews and I always say the same, I never say never, so I don’t know. No one’s sent me that information, it’s coming from you.”
While Lively and Meester never say never, Penn Badgley who portrayed Dan Humphrey, had other thoughts on working on a possible spin-off.
“I suppose you should never say never,” Badgley told Variety in 2018. “I suppose there are conditions where I would. Do I think those conditions will ever exist? No. But they might.”
HBO Max is set to launch in Spring 2020, stay tuned for more details about the reboot.
